DISTRUST OF THE SEXUAL DOUBLE STANDARD

Many women who are now able to talk about sex and to initiate sex in new and pleasurable ways are still hurt by the attitude of their partner, who has not escaped from the sexual double standard. These men show their hostility to women by castigating them as nymphomaniacs, or over-sexed, or by treating them as ‘loose women’. The men themselves want sex for the physical pleasure it gives them, but expect the woman only to ‘give’ sex because of their love for the man. The man remains the ‘sexpert’ – the conqueror. Such men do not treat women as real persons but as sex objects, to be enjoyed, and then neglected. A bitter Australian woman wrote: ‘Maybe I keep picking the wrong men, but it keeps on happening. Once they think I’m going to let them fuck me, they seem to let me know that I’m a “nothing”. I’m not a person, just a vagina to be used, a breast to be pulled, a mouth to put their tongue in.’

The double standard is alive and well in most, if not all, countries!
