A WOMAN’S RESPONSE TO SEX: ORGASM OCCURS, A RETURN TO NORMAL
It has never been possible to study the orgasmic changes in the clitoris due to its retraction beneath the hood formed by the labia minora. The changes in the vagina, however, are much easier to study. The outer one-third contracts regularly during orgasm, with normally three to five, up to a maximum of 10 to 15, contractions at 0.8 second intervals. After the initial three to six contractions, the space between them lengthens. Each contraction is intensely pleasurable; these fantastic sensations fall away as the contractions lessen.
How long orgasmic contractions last, their degree and the interval between them, varies among women and from one orgasm to another. Occasionally, with the highest tension levels, orgasm may start with a single deep contraction that lasts two to four seconds before muscle spasm develops into the regular contraction lasting less than a second.
A return to normal-After orgasm it can take a considerable time for the vagina to return to its normal appearance. As long as 10 to 15 minutes may elapse before the basic coloration returns to the vagina, and for the folds to reappear.
The clitoris returns to its normal overhanging position within five to ten seconds after orgasmic contractions have ceased, and the discoloration of the labia minora disappears just as quickly. Detumescence of the clitoral glans is a relatively slow process and may last five to ten minutes; in some women, it may take as long as 30 minutes. If orgasm isn’t reached, swelling of the clitoris may last for several hours after sexual activity.
